If you are considering home care for yourself or on behalf of a loved one, several options are open to you. One of Eaton Home Care’s most requested services is live-in care. But what exactly is live-in care? And how can you be confident that it is the right choice?
This page provides all the answers you need including who is live in care for and how you will know if you or your loved one requires live in care.
ncidentally, we have also created a super-helpful page called “How Does Live in Care Work?” which offers the ultimate stage-by-stage guide, including how live in care works in your own home.
What is Live-In Care?
Live-in care is where a highly trained, professional carer lives with you in your own home to provide personalised care.
It can be for individuals and couples and has a singular aim: to keep people safe, happy and as well as they can be in the place they love the most: at home – for as long as possible.
Fully regulated and accredited with the Care Quality Commission, we recognise that nothing less than the highest standards will do.
Eaton Home Care provide exceptional-standard care, designed entirely with your unique needs in mind. No plan is the same as another. Each care plan can “flex” over time, as someone’s health conditions change…
If you are concerned about the wellbeing of a loved one, Eaton Home Care can offer you the relief you deserve. Once in place, you will have the peace of mind to know that they are receiving the best, most practical yet sensitive care they could possibly have.

Who Will Need Live in Care?
Your live-in care package will vary and reflect your health and circumstances. It is good to know that, with Eaton Home Care your care plan will be flexible, given that your needs may change.
Who would need live-in care, and why? Here are a few reasons:
Physical disability or severe ill health: if you need continuous personal support around the home or have health needs requiring constant support, live-in care could be ideal. It will be comforting to know that should any health concerns arise, there will always be someone on hand to help you or to call for specialist help if necessary.
Age-related frailty: Our sense of balance may decline as we age, and our reflexes are not as fast as they used to be. If your Mum and Dad are in danger of trips and falls, live-in care can go towards reducing risk, through help with household tasks, mobility, and housework.
Dementia: As a progressive disease, people living with dementia may require ongoing care at home to keep them safe and secure – not least during the night when confusion may become worse. Staying secure with a trusted carer offers companionship and practical support with everything someone in cognitive decline needs.
Complex needs: You or someone you love may require several distinct types of care throughout the day and then again at night. This issue is dealt with quickly and effectively with one or two primary carers.
Someone unable or unwilling to settle in residential care: Your loved one may have experienced distress in a nursing home due to unfamiliar surroundings. Especially if dementia is an issue, an unknown environment can be frightening. Living at home, with a high level of support and care, could be the perfect solution.
Couples: where one person requires 24/7 care, and a couple wants to stay together, live-in care enables them both to remain at home for as long as possible – while receiving all the care they need.
Palliative Care: For most, if possible, at the palliative stage of care, most would much prefer to be in the familiar surroundings of their own home or a family members home. Eaton Home Care have extensive experience in live-in palliative care. If Palliative care is what you are looking for click here for further information.
How Will I Know If I Need Live-in Care?
Carer visits may not be enough. If you are already receiving care, you may start to realise that regular visits are not often enough to keep pace with your needs.
Ongoing ill health. If your health is not as robust as you would like it to be, the presence of a live-in carer could help prevent accidents or falls – and provide much-need company and reassurance.
A need for different types of care. Someone who requires a different kind of care during the day to that at nighttime may prefer just one or two carers, rather than other carers coming in each day.
What are the different types of live in care?
There are several types and, as mentioned each one will depend on your requirements.
24-hour, live-in care: round-the-clock support and care. This could involve more than one carer – someone during the night and a different person during daylight hours.
Convalescent care: Perhaps you are on an NHS pathway after a stay in hospital, we can step when this ends to provide live-in care. Your relatives may be concerned about your wellbeing or safety. After all, being in a hospital whether it is a private facility, or the NHS can make you feel a little vulnerable. Eaton Home Care’s services will step up to the mark, keeping an eye on you after your clinical treatment(s), offering companionship and keeping you safe as you return home – just in case.
Companionship care: Perhaps you are recovering from illness or feel that your mental health (and, by extension, your physical health) could benefit from the boost that the companionship of another person can bring. Plus, your live-in companion can provide practical support through shopping, laundry, cleaning – or simply provide the essential human connection we all need to boost our spirits.
Ad hoc, emergency care: Sometimes, short-notice care may be required. For example, you or your partner who may also be your carer may have suffered a sudden decline in their health or have been in an accident. A live-in care package could provide all the comfort and support needed to help you recover or in the absence of your partner, to remain at home.
Palliative care: Live-in care can be available for those with a terminal illness, who wish to remain at home for as long as possible. We recognise that this is, or will be, a difficult time, so receiving high-standard care could make all the difference. Read more about palliative care here.
You stay at home. Yes, it is the most obvious “plus,” but never to be underestimated.
Remaining within the comfort of your own home surrounded by the things that make you happy and secure, can only help your wellbeing. Live-in care offers the best of both worlds: a qualified, professional carer to look after you and ensure you are safe and happy.
Wellbeing. Staying at home can promote independence, safety and, in our view, immense calm and wellbeing. There is no need for compromise, and with live-in care, things can only get better.
Continuity and consistency. One or two carers prevent the unhelpful revolving door syndrome sometimes found in residential care. And the often awkward need to forge a new, positive understanding with someone else.
Affordability. You may be surprised at how cost-effective it can be: contact Eaton Home Care to discuss our pricing structure vs. residential care fees.
Companionship: Loneliness is to be avoided, especially as we get older. Live-in care provides that all-important boost of oxytocin, the feel-good hormone associated with bonding and attachment. Being with someone else, especially if you trust and like them, is good for you.
Relationships. With live-in care, you can stay with your partner. You may have been together for a long time, and there is no need to be separated now.
You can stop worrying. Calling all sons, daughters, nieces, nephews or concerned friends: Your loved one is in safe hands – now, and for the foreseeable future.
The benefits of live-in care, especially over and above having to move into a care home are significant for quality of life as well as dedicated care round the clock. Once you have decided live-in care is the right choice the next crucial step is ensuring you work with the right live-in care company. With Eaton Home Care’s 60 years combined experience which is nurse-led, caring and proud of our dedicated team who are specialist trained in higher dependency requirements, rest assured we will find you a carer that is right for you.
What Would Live-In Care Look Like in Your Own Home?
Eaton Home Care will match you to a live-in carer extremely carefully. This is important as they will quite literally be living with you, so remember that he or she will need their own room. (Also, that they will be cooking for themselves, too.) Remember, your live-in carer will need their own room.
This translates to assistance with getting out of bed, washing, and getting dressed. Likewise, a clean, tidy house to make you feel relaxed and stress-free. Plus, tasty meals cooked as you like them. And, so much more, including companionship built on a foundation of authentic trust and friendship.
